Scientific Classification
  Kingdom Animalia
  Phylum Chordata
  Class Sauropsida
  Superorder Dinosauria
  Order Ornithischia
  Suborder Thyreophora
  Infraorder Ankylosauria
  Family Ankylosauridae
  Genus Saichania
Saichania was an armored herbivore (plant-eater) that lived in the late Cretaceous period around about 80 million years, in what is today southern Mongolia. Saichania's diet is believed to have consisted of tough vegetation - it had a solid hard palate which seems adapted for this purpose.

Saichania was protected from predators with armor that include bony plates on its back, spikes, and a heavy bony growth on its tail which it swing as a club. The animal was about 23 feet long (7 meters) and weighed about 1 ton.

It is belived that Saichania lived in a hot, arid, desert-type environment - and it seems to have possessed a number of adaptations to this environment. Saichania's skull was equipped with complex air passages that would have helped it keep cool. Additionally, it may have a salt gland near its nostrils.

Product Description:

Armored dinosaurs were some of the earliest dinosaurs named, including the ankylosaur Hylaeosaurus in 1833 and Stegosaurus in 1877. But these armored dinosaurs, or thyreophorans, have been the least studied group because they lack the visceral appeal of Tyrannosaurus and the fossil abundance of ceratopsians and hadrosaurs. The incredible diversity of armored dinosaurs has only recently been appreciated: the discovery of new stegosaurs in the Jurassic of China and the United States, and of new ankylosaurs from the Lower Cretaceous of North America have led to renewed interest in thyreophorans. The Armored Dinosaurs brings together the latest studies by an international group of dinosaur paleontologists and provides descriptions of the original specimens of Hyaleosaurus and Stegosaurus, names new thyreophorans, and redescribes historically important specimens from Europe.

The contributors are Paul M. Barrett, John Bird, William T. Blows, Don Burge, Kenneth Carpenter, H. Trevor Clifford, Karen Cloward, Margery C. Coombs, Rodolfo A. Corio, Philip J. Currie, Tracy L. Dominant for over 160 million years during the Triassic Period through the Cretaceous Period, Dinosaurs were a diverse and varied grouping of animals, including over 9,000 bird species. Dinosaur fossils have been found on every continent and paleontologists and paleobiologists continue to gather information on the different species.
