Torvosaurus

dinosaur picture torvosaurus

Scientific Classification
  Kingdom Animalia
  Phylum Chordata
  Class Sauropsida
  Superorder Dinosauria
  Order Saurischia
  Suborder Theropoda
  Superfamily Spinosauroidea
  Family Megalosauridae
  Genus Torvosaurus
Torvosaurus was a carnivore (meat-eater) that lived in the late Jurassic period, about 144 million years ago. Fossils of the animal were first found in North America (in Dry Mesa Quarry in Colorado), but subsequently have been found in Europe (specifically Portugal).

Torvosaurus is believed to have been the largest Theropod dinosaur living in the Jurassic period. It was about 30 to 36 feet (9 to 11 meters) in length, about 8 feet (2.5 meters) tall at the hips, and weighed at least 2 tons. Scientists believe that Torvosaurus was fairly closely related to the somewhat earlier dinosaur, Megalosaurus

  1. Torvosaurus was a genus of dinosaur.

  2. "Torvosaurus" means "savage lizard".

  4. Torvosaurus was a Theropod - a member of a group of related bipedal dinosaurs that included the ancestors of birds (although Torvosaurus was not itself an ancestor of birds).

  5. Torvosaurus lived about 144 million years ago, during the Jurassic period.

  6. Torvosaurus lived in North America and Europe (fossils have been found in Portugal).

  7. Torvosaurus was a carnivore (meat-eater).

  8. Torvosaurus was about 30 to 36 feet (9 to 11 meters) long, and about 8 feet (2.5 meters) tall at the hips.

  9. Torvosaurus weighed about 2 tons.
