But, what exactly were dinosaurs?
Dinosaurs were one of several kinds of
prehistoric reptiles that lived during the
Mesozoic Era,
often known informally as the "Age of Reptiles".
There were many different kinds
("species") of dinosaurs,
which varied in size from about the size of a chicken to over 100
feet long.
- Some dinosaurs were meat-eaters ("carnivores"),
but others ate plants ("herbivores").
- Some dinosaurs walked on four legs, and some walked on two.
- Some dinosaurs had armor and horns, and some even had primitive feathers.
Dinosaurs dominated the earth for over 165 million years, but all
died out
("became extinct")
at the end of the Cretaceous period,
65 million years ago.
Nobody is certain why they went extinct - but most scientists now believe it was caused by an asteroid
hitting the earth and the subsequent environmental changes.
Today we know about dinosaurs mainly because of the
fossil remains: of dinosaur bones, dinosaur eggs, dinosaur droppings, and even dinosaur footprints.
Nobody knows for sure what a dinosaur sounded like,
or even what color they were.
Dinosaurs may live on today!
Some dinosaurs were very bird-like, and it is likely that they may have been
ancestors of today's birds.
Please use the menus on the left to learn about different types of dinosaurs,
and to find out about various fun activities related to these giant reptiles!
