African Dinosaurs



Africa was very different during the time of the dinosaurs:
  • During the early part of the Mesozoic Era (the Triassic Period), Africa was joined with all the other continents in one super-continent known as Pangaea.

  • By the Jurassic Period, Pangaea begun to break up into two smaller super-continents: Laurasia and Gondwanaland. Africa was part of the southern super-continent, Gondwanaland, which consisted of South America, Africa, India, Australia and Antarctica. Separating Africa from Asia, was the Tethys Sea (also sometimes known as the Tethys Ocean).

  • By the Cretaceous Period, Gondwanaland begun to break-up: Africa separated from South America, Antarctica and India, and begun a slow journey Northwards. Thus, the Tethys Sea gradually shrank in size, and was to eventually disappear.
