Haasiophis was an early snake that lived in the late
Cretaceous period.
Its fossils
were first discovered near Ramallah in the West Bank,
about 12 miles (19 kilometers) North of
Jerusalem.
Haasiophis is believed to be from a slightly earlier time period than
Najash
(another early snake), and unlike
Najash,
Haasiophis, along with other early snakes from the same general region
(Eupodophis and
Pachyrhachis),
was found in marine deposits and thus must have lived in a marine environment.
