Proterosuchus
(not to be confused with Protosuchus)
was one of the largest land animals during
the early
Triassic period.
It was about 5 feet (1.5 meters) long, and outwardly rather resembled a modern
crocodile - with long jaws, a long tail, and short legs.
Proterosuchus is thought to have been an ambush predator, and would have
been at ease moving from land to water. It perhaps waited for its prey just
below the surface of water, and grabbed prey in a similar method to the
way that crocodiles do. It had a number of adaptations for this lifestyle,
iuncluding eyes on the top of its head (allowing it to hide just below the
surface of the water), and a hook-shape mouth that would have been extremely difficult
for prey animals to struggle free from.

Proterosuchus was a carnivore of the early Triassic period
